Great explanation, James. I'd just add one bit of advice - when you do as James has suggested, I would change only ONE THING at a time and play with that for a while to really understand what that one change accomplished. If you change too many things at once, you may have overshot what you're trying to do and get frustrated.

Welcome to the world of the absolute best pedals out there. :)

nope, after "investigating", UPS decided the package was lost. now, Sir Dennis has to go through trying to get them to refund him the retail cost plus shipping.

however, in the meantime, good Sir Dennis shipped a full second package, which has just arrived today!! so stoked on these things - such craftsmanship that they are works of industrial art. Dennis has thought of everything with these guys. i only just opened them, but just looking at them is beautiful. now, off to play with getting them mounted/set up...

      will report back.

my package of triggers has been sitting two states away for a week now. had to open a UPS claim investigation. sucks waiting. hope they get it moving again soon, so anxious to play with them!

yeah coming from a marching drumline, i also put one of those on my snare way back when. i loved it... until i realized that cranking it down like I did with the marching snare completely warped my metal kit snare. i was unhappy lol. so yeah keep that in mind and go gentle with it if you do try. the drum will fail before those heads do.

      Nice video.
Love your snare sound, do you use snarewires ? Or are they turned off ?

yeah, standard number of strands. what i do differently is i use a marching snare-side head. gives it a deeper, more "throaty" sound. got the tip from matt cameron and tried it out, i like it.

Looks tasty! is that a chart for a QOTSA song behind and to your right? Excellent choice.

    • T.C. has written a new post "(Optional) Velcro placement" 01.19.2023

i've actually recently started removing the front velcro entirely, for a couple reasons:
      1) with my slave pedal, i use the attachment above, so unnecessary
      2) with my main pedal, the spurs of the kick keep it from really moving

Also, probably noteworthy, I play something like a combo of more traditional heel up/flat, so no swivel or side-to-side motion whatsoever. When I mess around with heel/toe technique, I do get a very slight bounce, so if I ever take this technique seriously, I'd probably reattach the front velcro. When I did have it attached, I found it difficult to get the pedal quickly positioned under the kick, as it would immediately stick to the rug. Made things very fiddly during change-overs. So I removed it. Now I just angle the pedal, slide it under the drum in the right place, loosely tighten the clamp, and plant the heel. Works for me. Obviously it sounds like this really wouldn't work for you, but I'm confident you'll find something!

As you can see, I removed all the little pads entirely. Nothing on the bottom but one piece of velcro at the heel with spikes sticking out very shortly.

Hey dude, sorry I posted the reply in your other thread before seeing this one. Seems like you've really started experimenting with various velcro placements and setups. Excellent news, you will find something that works for you!

I think James has covered pretty much every suggestion I would have stated too, so I'll add something different - here are two things I use that I believe are very helpful:
Road Runner Drum Rug w/ Weighted Corners (item #RRDR1) - this one: amazon dot com/gp/product/B01I73HW16/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
-- this thing was MADE for velcro! yes, over time spikes will create holes (don't believe the marketing that it "eliminates floor damage" - I actually also put the Aucuda drum rug (amazon dot com/gp/product/B07WSM8F8S/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1) under it when I play on hardwood floors), as it's relatively thin, but man does it ever grip velcro. In addition to my ACD hardware, I also use these: Protection Racket Drum Mat Numbered Markers (amazon dot com/gp/product/B005ZPZL3Q/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1) - I can vacuum over these and they do not come up! May not work for you, depending on how big your setup is, but I'm sure there are larger similar rugs.

Pearl PS85 Pedal Stabilizer (item #PS85) - this one: amazon dot com/gp/product/B0002E1VYS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
-- I have used this thing on my slave pedal for years and my pedal absolutely does not move an inch. I'm not a "technique" player, I stomp the fucking things.

Hope you find something that works for you dude!

Note - change "amazon dot " to "amazon." in the URLs, as I'm not allowed to post links at the moment. But being in IT, I'm sure you know that :)

    • T.C. has written a new post "Darwin FTW Hoop Clamp Tricks and Tweaks?" 01.19.2023

Yeah, the position and style of the clamp does make it somewhat difficult to get to sometimes and "fiddly". When trying to get on and off stage quickly, it's really the thing (tightening and loosening) that takes the longest, IF (big if) you're trying to fully tighten it each time. Very happy James made the video. It's a discussion I had with Dennis years ago, who brought up a great point - same point raised above: if properly secured to a proper rug, the pedal doesn't really even need a clamp! As James has made abundantly clear, there really is no need to tighten/loosen the clamp every time. I generally keep my clamp "loose enough" so I can quickly slip it onto (and off of) the hoop. As James has also pointed out, pay attention to the height of your front bass drum spurs - too high and create an acute angle at the clamp, which can apply undue and unintentional force, prompting unwanted and unnecessary movement.

So the short answer is, if you find it difficult to get to in order to tighten/loosen, simply don't! With proper setup and maintenance (fresh velcro when needed, spikes & spurs not too long, etc.), your pedal clamp should happily eat the bass drum hoop consistently. :)

      Good luck!
