    • Dennis has written a new post "Regular springs vs. heavy springs" 04.09.2024

Usually, a broken spring (especially heavy ones) is a sign of overstressing the system (too much basic tension along with too much beater angle) and an inefficient setup. - You mentioned that you also broke stock Tama springs before leading to the question of your current setup. - If you like to share some pictures I would love to help within my possibilities. The springs are designed for my pedals and also the upgrades I am offering. - I just want to point that out. Short springs offer additional progressiveness but they also have their dynamic limits. A longer spring would bring you back to a less progressive setup counters the effect of the spring geometry upgrade. It will make the pedal once again less responsive.

My general advice would be to go for regular/lighter beater (if you are currently using heavy ones), lower the spring tension and try to get the feedback needed via the beater angle (dynamic spring tension) for an efficient setup. Anything else is just playing against the pedal. Feel free to share a few pics of your setup and I hope to be able to help.

What beater are you currently using? - to me, it sounds like you are looking for more control over the beater and based on your previous setup and problems with springs, chances are that a heavy beater is currently being used.

Depending on your playing style and music there are in general different setups that can be considered. James Chapman has made a video a while ago in regards to his Darwins but you can address general adjustments also on all other pedals.

If you want to change the feeling it is highly recommended to change one thing at a time. After that combine certain adjustments to get closer to the feeling you are looking for.

If you want to change something and compensate the result of it (aka having a feeling similar to before making the change) then you would need to twist 2.5 other things - but I don't see the point in that.

Moving the beater forward while increasing the spring tension results in the very same thing as keeping the beater where it was (of course there are some little dynamic and leverage changes around the cam, especially on the DD-cam, but not much given its just a few degrees)

      Good morning!

All ball bearings/sealed are enclosed and greased internally. There is no need to do any maintenance on moving parts and ball bearings. I actually said that to Ando when he requested guidance for making the video.

If you have a different pedal with some open-type ball bearings (very old iron cobras for example) a drop of oil can be beneficial. It also helps to have a little bit of oil on a chain to prevent any corrosion.

Generally spoken the best thing you can do is:
      - keep it dust-free as good as possible.
      - AVOID WD40 all times (this stuff is not grease, it is a cleaner with oil to get stuck parts going again)
      - keep the pedal / store it in an area with low humidity (steel parts, such as springs and beater shafts will thank you)
      - Keep the beater shafts clean (they are made from hardened steel) They can can be affected by surface corrosion (easy to wipe off), especially in wet environment or if being touched frequently.
      - Do not overtighten any screws. - "hand tight" is usually more than enough.

      Best regards
      Dennis

When I first saw Darwin, I immediately fell in love with the shape of the footboard. It was perfect and unique. I hate sole style footboards. But probably someone likes it. Why not have a footboard selection option on Phantom?

I'm sorry, but there's no option to change the design/geometry of the Phantom's footboard layout.

I'm wondering which longboard upgrade option if any covers my Iron Cobra Power Glide Double Kick pedal? The Silver, Black, or Speed Cobras? Or none😕?

The Iron Cobra model is compatible with your Iron Cobra Powerglide, The Speed Cpbra Model is only compatible with the Speed Cobra versions from Tama.
So you either need a black or silver (depends on your preferences) Iron Cobra model of the longboard conversion kit :-)

      Hello Eric,

sorry for the late reply, I don't have much time outside of the daily work around ACD at the moment.

That looks absolutely awesome! - thank you very much for the kind words and especially for sharing your experience and some insights into your heavily modified pedal! ;-)

Hey everyone! Just hoping to get some insight or suggestions here. Recently got the ultimate driveshaft for my speed cobra 910 double pedal. On the right pedal, the driveshaft slides in just fine- but in the slave pedal it does not fully slide over the connection piece. Any recommendations? Should I file down the male piece on the pedal? I will attach a photo. Thanks!

      Hello Neil,

as replied via email - There is no need to worry! The connector is machined rather short and efficient to fit any pedal with a semi-round connector and every pedal has slightly different lengths.

Simply mount and enjoy it :-)

Dennis you are amazing!!! Thank you so much for stocking the longboards!!!!

Will the footboard upgrades work with the first edition Speed Cobras that came out in 2010? I believe they have a shorter footboard than the current Speed Cobra 910s in the marketplace.

thanks for the kind words! Yes, the footboard conversion fits all iron cobra and speed cobra models. they all share the same baseplate and mounting screw lineup. :-)

When I was reselling them in the days before I made the Game Changers, I remember that they were coming alongside a little booklet with detailed installation and setup informations. (don't have any on hand right now). Since I also know that Ondřej (the guy behind it) is a very nice and helpful person I may also know that it is in his interest to offer support and as much informations as possible. - So without evaluating anyone's situation it should be always an option to reach out to those behind it- Retailer or manufacturer should always be a source of information, especially on more critical topics.

But I also have a lot of people asking very tricky questions or requesting solutions to some very special circumstances in one random facebook groups or who knows where instead of simply writing me an email (especially regarding questions where I might be the only one to help - offering parts or spares for example - stuff breaks and people do silly things sometimes. Absolutely no problem if someone is also given the chance to help ;-)) .
It is where we are right know. - Luckily I do have the support from lots of friendly people who help to direct these situations towards my email inbox where I am able and more than happy to help. - offering answers and resolving situations.

      Best

..both state, that they adjust the triggers' height so that the trigger is fired slightly _before_ the head is hit.

and that's one big problem I see. - people more and more tend to ignore advices and manuals from developers while copying nonsense.

If you want to kill your piezo (the hearth of the trigger) rapidly and if you are not in a position with pile of spares free of charge in reach or next to you, go for it.
If you are looking for a long lasting, solution listen to the people behind it (On Trigger, as well as my stuff) and their manuals/advices and avoid the "brand" that screams and shouts for exposure and influencers the loudest ;-)

That's exactly what I meant. If you adjust any of the parameters like footboard height, beater angle and stuff, I'll need to re-adjust the trigger position everytime.

      Well, maybe, maybe not.

For me the footboard height, especially the footboard height at the point of impact, is the part of the geometry that is most important for a good feeling that I am used to, so I always adjust my footboard heights to the trigger height that I chose once, meaning the triggers also serve me as a kind of marking how high my footboards should be.

But yeah, that's only one possible way to handle it.

In theorie this all makes sense but the thing is that usually there's simply no time during a 10 minute changeover and line check alongside a sketchy drum kit. I would strongly advice against using the triggers as a reference point, especially in the direction where potentially way too much force could be applied on a very small and fragile piezo element (all triggers share this little piezo element and have a similar with being crushed. Please adjust the sensor/trigger according to the circumstances (these are usually tiny adaptions within a a few millimeters max.)

    • Dennis has written a new post "Dynamic Beater Rotates as I Play?" 07.18.2023

      1. It is most likely not a user error.
      2. no one but me can address/solve the issuer since no one has access to parts and be able to ship them.
      3. I check email multiple times daily, every day, in the forum I have to look out for stuff actively. - that can take days or weeks. in case of an "emergency" definitely not ideal
      4. replying to this matter publically still doesn't address the issue and I still / on top have to communicate via email to solve this specific matter.

just my 2 cents. The idea behind the forum is to share and discuss beneficial things for others and situations where people can help out each other (setups for example). technical problems without any further details are ideally addressed directly to me since I have maybe some insights into the technical background and construction details. I thought this would be an advantage over not having any option to contact a person with insights (like is the case with any other "brand")
